Wild

Not every bird on the water is a duck

Ducks sit in a bigger waterbird family. Know the neighbours so the map makes sense.

Mute is the park bird. Whooper and Bewick's (tundra) show yellow on the bill in winter. Give all of them space.

Towpath cheat-sheet

Duck: sieve or dive. Grebe: dagger bill. Coot and moorhen: rails. Swan: long neck. A field guide settles arguments; binoculars start them properly.

Five-minute drill

Name a duck, a rail, and something that is neither. If you cannot, you are still guessing. That is a fine place to start.

Wigeon exception

Geese graze. Ducks mostly don't, except wigeon on a flooded meadow. Look at the bill, then enjoy the confusion.

Next step

Once the neighbours have names, the habitats page and the map start to make sense.
