Park mallards hide a quieter story. Several ducks that still appear in field guides are declining. Britain looks full of birds because mallards cope. Pochard do not owe us a healthy population just because we still see one in January.
Pochard
The common pochard (Aythya ferina) is listed as Vulnerable by IUCN. European wintering numbers have fallen with wetland loss, poor breeding success, and pressure along the flyway. A bird on a gravel pit is not the same as a recovered species.
White-headed duck
The white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) is Endangered. Spain holds a key European population. North American ruddy ducks released from collections hybridised with them. Keeping ornamental waterfowl is biosecurity, whether it feels like it or not.
Ordinary harm
Your local water is a classroom. Bread slurry and off-lead dogs in May teach the wrong lesson. A sign, a lead, and a hide teach something closer to the truth.

How “still on the pit” hides a decline
IUCN lists common pochard as Vulnerable. UK wintering has fallen with wetland loss, poor breeding success, and pressure along the flyway. WeBS is how we know; a single exciting day is not.
White-headed duck is a different lesson: collections and released North American ruddy ducks made hybrids. Keeping ornamental waterfowl is biosecurity. It does not feel like biosecurity when the bird is pretty. It still is.
What actually moves a needle
Membership of WWT, RSPB, or a county wildlife trust buys wet land that stays wet. A field guide and a pair of binoculars buy attention, which is how a scrape gets defended in a planning meeting. A dumped farm mallard buys a mess.
