Collins Bird Guide
If you only buy one, this is still the one most UK birders mean. Search the title; take the latest edition the results actually have in stock. Pair it with 8×42 binoculars, not with a bigger book.
Books that are not ID books
Make Way for Ducklings is still the walking-to-water story. Elisha Cooper’s The Duck is a year with a working bird, not a mascot. Those live on the gifts page and the culture page. They will not help you separate a pochard from a tufted duck at 80 metres. Collins will.
